It’s an eye-popping number – Georgia plans to remove 477,883 voters from the voter rolls this year, leaving them unable to vote unless they re-register. This will be one of the largest cancellations of voter registrations in U.S. history.
Many (in fact, probably most) of these voters have moved out of state and are no longer eligible to vote in Georgia. Removing those voters is an important part of maintaining an accurate and updated voting list.
But 100,000 of these voters don’t appear to have moved – instead, they’ve made the personal decision to not vote in any election in recent years. Under Georgia’s “use it or lose it” law, these voters will be purged even if they are completely eligible to vote.
The last time Georgia purged voters under the “use it or lose it” law, 87,000 of the purged voters re-registered to vote – which proves that they were always eligible to vote and should have never been removed. Now, eight years later, Georgia officials are gearing up to do the same thing all over again.
We can’t sit on the sidelines when democracy is at stake!
The Democratic Party of Georgia is organizing volunteers to call these voters and help them save their voter registrations – and here at Power the Vote, we’re also stepping up to do our part.
We’re ready to commit $5,000 to the Democratic Party of Georgia’s voter protection program, to fund the technology needed to power these calls to voters. But we need your help to make this work possible!
Can you give today to support our work to fight back for voters at risk of losing their right to vote?
